Contemporary Pond Construction

Our customer loved Koi Carp so much that he wanted to make them a massive feature in his back garden. Our brief was to design and build a contemporary garden pond that would be both technically and aesthetically breathtaking. He wanted us to make sure the filter was within easy reach so he was able to maintain it comfortably, that the fish had shade in the summer and warmth in the winter and he wanted to make the pond a massive feature that meant he could enjoy the fish as much as possible.

The unique 6m x 3.5m design we came up with was big enough to hold 6000gallons of water. Underneath the ground the pond was made mainly of concrete with a fibreglass liner but, as soon as we came above ground we used bricks and sandstone to create a modern twist on a very simple classic pond. For this size pond we also needed quite a sizeable filtration system which we part sunk into the ground and covered with hinged roof so that all our customer need do would be to open the roof and step over the small ridge onto the steps. The roof to the filter house was covered with artificial grass so that it blended into the rest of our customers garden. Lastly, before adding the water, we installed a heating system into the pond so that the fish are able to stay active all year round.

Once the initial pond was built we added the features that would finish it beautifully. We gave our customer a window built into the brick wall of the pond so that he was able to view the fish from his patio, lawned area and even from inside his house. The waterfall we added was a simple stainless steel blade that would provide the fish with oxygen whilst looking and sounding impressive. Lastly we incorporated a removable sail above the pond so the fish had shade in the summer. This pond took us a total of 3 weeks to build but will bring a lifetime of enjoyment.

After the pond had been left for a while for its ecosystem to stabilise our Water and Koi expert Richard went to Shirley Aquatics with our customer to choose the best Koi to fill the pond with.  3 years later and the pond is thriving with activity with the fish and our customer enjoying every element.
